Ever wonder how big hit sites drive traffic to their sites? Well the way they are doing it is pretty simple, they set up some pretty expensive ad campaigns. The fact is that they can afford to do this because lets face it they are making the revenue to support it. Now you can go ahead and spend you children’s college tuition on an advertising campaign. Or you can follow some of the advise I am about to give you. You see I do not claim to be an expert at generating traffic but I sure do know how to get some and spend very little doing so.
There are many ways to generate low cost traffic without spending money that you don’t have or can not afford. Many people will try to get into the high dollar ad campaigns and end up losing more than they ever thought they could ever lose. What I am going to attempt to do here is give you a few ways you can help your site out a great deal.
First you should do some traffic exchange, WTF! yeah you might be doing some right now and not even know that is what you are doing. It is very similar to link exchanges but you usually surf others sites for credits. Some examples of traffic exchanges would be SiteHoppin, Entrecard these are some of the best that I have found.
Next I would say that I would recommend that you make back links to your site and lots of them. Some easy ways to do this is to sign up for as many social sites as you can handle. Make sure that you put your URL in the profile. Next comment on blogs that you find to be interesting. I would say that you can do it on any blog, many say that it will do you no good to comment on a “nofollow” blog. I disagree with this because if you write real comments people will follow which will create a natural “dofollow”. Then you need to be kind to others and post a link to them or maybe to a review with out expecting anything in return. You will get links back to you if you follow this rule of thumb, the reason why you will get them back is because good things always come to those that help others.
Join some forums and post some good content and feedback to others. They way you can generate traffic here is by setting up your forum signature. Make sure you check the TOS to ensure that you do not break any rules and get banned. Not only will you generate traffic from forums you will gain some priceless knowledge. I like to surf Digital Point Forum.
The last tip I can give you is to ensure that you have some really good content on your blog/site. I know many say content is king. What I will say is that content is like mother earth your blog will not live with out it,as we can not live without the earth. So on that note I would say you should blog from the heart and not jump on any banwagon. You see the MMO blogs are a dime a dozen…..wait my blog is a MMO blog! Yeah I know that! But I really believe that I am blogging from the heart here. So sue me for having a passion for money and helping others.

Very informative post. I believe that free traffic is always the best and no blogger should pay for it when he/she is first starting out.
Many different types of social networks are giving all this for free to us bloggers.

Mike,
Thanks for the comment. I have found many free ways to help promote my blog, and I will continue to write post like this in the near future.
I agree that many people get a lot of traffic from forum signatures
Hey Shaun,
For the record, you have a wicked awesome name.
In the spirit of keeping the Shaun’s of the world together, I’d like to link to your blog from my website at http://www.WorkFromHomeCode.com. It will be on the blogroll so it’ll be site-wide.
In return, just link to my Make Money website at http://ican-makemoney.com with the anchor text of “make money”. This way we both get site-wide one-way links.

Traffic building takes lots of time. You just have to keep going forward. Anytime you have a chance to type in your website address do it. However, don’t do it in a spammy way, it could taint your online reputation. Adding it to forums, emails is a great way to get more exposure. Sometimes weeks later you get this mystery hit because of an effort that you had made.
Before embarking on a SEO campaign, it’s good to be aware of the difference of nofollow and dofollow so as not to waste your time. I believe the majority of forums have a nofollow policy. http://cashcuddler.com
